GEORGE TOWN: Chow Kon Yeow, the Penang Pakatan chairman, has explained that the low visitor turnout at the Pakatan Harapan political talk at Penang Chinese Town Hall was not due to lack of support, but rather because more people preferred to watch it online. The political talk was broadcast live on social media channels on Saturday (July 29), which Chow believes is a reflection of the “new norm”.
He stated, “This is the new norm, so they switched methods of listening to the talk, for online… we have Facebook Live, so the reach there is much bigger compared to physical.”
Viral photos showed many empty seats during the talk, leading to allegations that attendees left in protest when a DAP leader spoke. However, Chow refuted these claims, explaining that the visitors left due to the lateness of the hour.
Chow, who is running for the Padang Kota seat, expressed satisfaction with the public’s response to the campaign, stating, “I attended the Prai service centre opening just now and was informed that during a candidate walkabout in Taman Chai Leng market, the response was very good and I was also warmly received in Bayan Baru, but we can’t be overconfident.”
He also highlighted that the online viewership of the event was substantial, with the Penang DAP Facebook page revealing that it was watched by 16,700 people.
The Penang Pakatan chairman acknowledged the importance of reaching a wide target and assured that there would be 13 more days of campaigning with various forms of important activities, such as walkabouts.
