PETALING JAYA: Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has denied claims made by Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that the Unity Government plans to increase the number of Parliamentary seats from 222 to 300. Fahmi stated that these claims are a rumour mongering tactic in the ongoing Pulai by-elections in Johor.
Fahmi expressed his surprise at hearing such figures for the first time as a cabinet minister and questioned the source of Muhyiddin’s information. He believed that Muhyiddin is using his imagination to scare the public in the Pulai by-election. Fahmi suggested that Muhyiddin should seek clarification from the Prime Minister in Parliament instead.
Fahmi reminded Muhyiddin not to play truant during Parliament proceedings but instead ask his questions during the Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT), telling him not to be lazy.
During an event in Kempas, Muhyiddin claimed that the unity government is planning to amend the constitution to increase the number of parliamentary seats from 222 to 300. He added that a redelineation exercise would be carried out if the government enjoys a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
The Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections are scheduled to take place on September 9.
