Climate activist Greta Thunberg found herself in trouble with the law during a demonstration in The Hague, the Netherlands, where she was detained twice by the police on Saturday. The first time she was detained, along with other protesters, was when they attempted to block a major highway leading into The Hague.

After being released, Thunberg wasted no time in joining a smaller group of protesters who were blocking a different road that led to the railway station. It was during this second protest that she was once again detained and taken away in a police van. She was held for several hours before being released later that evening, as confirmed by a spokesperson from Extinction Rebellion, the protest organisers.

Prior to her detentions, Thunberg expressed her reasons for protesting to journalists, citing the existential crisis the world is currently facing. She emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We are in a planetary emergency and we are not going to stand by and let people lose their lives and livelihood and be forced to become climate refugees when we can do something.”

The activists participating in the protest were aiming to block the nearby A12 highway, a tactic that has been employed multiple times in recent months in an effort to demand an end to subsidies for fossil fuels. Police had previously driven detained protesters to a different part of town where they were released without further consequences.

While local police refrained from commenting on individual cases, they did confirm that everyone attempting to block roads was detained. On a social media platform, police reported that a total of 412 protesters had been detained, largely due to their involvement in a protest that had been banned.
