KUANTAN: A climber died after being hit by a fallen tree while sleeping in an incident at Seputih Camp near Gunung Rajah, Kuala Tahan, Jerantut on Sunday (Oct 13).

Jerantut District police chief supt Zukri Muhammad said the victim, Wan Nurulhuda Mior Abdullah, 49, was confirmed dead after arriving at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Kuantan air base at 8.55pm, reported Sinar Harian.

According to him, during the incident, the victim was reportedly injured in the hip and was unconscious.

“Based on the information gathered, a group of 10 climbers and a mountain ranger started climbing the mountain last Monday (Oct 7).

“They are expected to come down on Sunday. However, at about noon on that day, the police received information that the victim was hit by a fallen tree while sleeping,” he said.

Supt Zukri said the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) helicopter had arrived in Kuala Tahan to help rescue victims.

“Upon arriving at the airbase, the victim was taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) Kuantan,” he said.

He added that the search and rescue team had also prepared in Kuala Tahan for roadside assistance if the helicopter service could not be used.

“Help by land is quite difficult because it will take about two days to reach the location, and there is no telephone network,” he said.
