LOS ANGELES, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) — According to a recently published study, live vaccinations given to children who had previously undergone liver or kidney transplants were found to be safe and effective in providing protection against several life-threatening conditions.
Experts at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Colorado stated that this discovery could potentially help safeguard more vulnerable children from diseases such as measles, mumps, and chicken pox.
In a cohort study involving 281 pediatric liver and kidney transplant recipients from 18 different transplant centers in the United States, no severe adverse events were observed after the administration of live vaccinations. Additionally, the majority of children showed the development of protective antibodies.
These findings hold significant importance due to the increasing rates of measles, mumps, and varicella-zoster virus (which causes chicken pox) both nationally and globally. These diseases pose a particular risk to immunocompromised children, potentially leading to life-threatening conditions.
Lara Danziger-Isakov, senior author of the study published in JAMA Network Open, emphasized the significance of the results in addressing this issue.
