TORONTO (Reuters) – Canadian National Railway Co (CN) announced on Tuesday night that the internet connectivity failure, which resulted in signal issues and significant delays and cancellations for Toronto rush-hour commuters, has been resolved.

In the earlier part of the day, hundreds of train commuters in Toronto, Canada’s largest city, had to find alternative ways to get home after the Ontario regional transit operator, Metrolinx, temporarily suspended its commuter trains in the Toronto area and warned travelers to anticipate further disruptions throughout the evening.

CN, the largest railroad in Canada, revealed in a late-night statement that its internet connectivity had been restored. The company apologized for the impact caused by the outage and stated that while there was no indication of a cyber security issue, the cause of the outage is still being investigated.

GO trains and buses, which connect downtown Toronto to suburbs and small towns in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area, serve approximately 190,000 passengers daily, according to GO Transit’s website.

Angry and frustrated commuters were stranded at Union Station in downtown Toronto. David Miller, a coffee shop worker, expressed his frustration, stating, “This is just crazy, whatever it is, they (GO) need to do better.” He had three planned train rides canceled.

GO Transit advised travelers to seek alternative arrangements, but the sudden surge in demand for taxis caused Uber to triple their fares, as reported by several individuals who attempted to book rides.

An Uber spokesperson explained that prices increase temporarily when there is a higher number of ride requests than available drivers. In response to the GO transit situation, Uber implemented surge pricing limits, according to spokesperson Keerthana Rang.
