According to reports from Kota Kinabalu, a tragic incident occurred at a hostel in Sabah’s east Lahad Datu district on March 22, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old vocational school student. The incident allegedly stemmed from a dispute over a missing RM85.

It is suspected that the teenager was targeted by his dormitory mates who accused him of stealing the RM85 that had gone missing from two other students. Lahad Datu district police chief Asst Comm Dr Rohan Shah Ahmad revealed in a statement on March 23 that the victim, Mohammad Namie Aizzat Mohd Narul Azwan, was believed to have taken RM35 and RM50 from two different students at the hostel, leading to the fatal confrontation.

The suspects supposedly blamed the victim for the missing money and proceeded to physically assault him, resulting in his tragic demise. As investigations into the matter continue, a six-day remand order has been secured for the 13 suspects, all aged between 16 and 19.

Following the discovery of the victim’s body in the dormitory, all the suspects were apprehended by authorities on the same day. Statements have been taken from 12 witnesses, including hostel wardens, security personnel, and students involved in the incident.

Asst Comm Dr Rohan Shah Ahmad also mentioned that drug tests conducted on the suspects came back negative, and 12 smartphones belonging to the suspects have been confiscated for further investigation. The authorities are awaiting the complete results of the post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of the victim’s death.

The post-mortem process took place at the Forensic Department of Lahad Datu Hospital on the same day, with the victim’s family members present outside. Mohammad Nazmie, the deceased student, was enrolled in a bio-technic course at the vocational school.

Meanwhile, the family and friends of the victim are grieving the loss of their loved one, as they try to come to terms with the sudden and senseless nature of his death. The school, students, and staff members are also grappling with the emotional aftermath of this tragic event.

As the investigation progresses and more details emerge, the hope is that lessons can be learned from this incident to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The importance of cultivating a safe and supportive environment for students, both inside and outside the classroom, cannot be understated.

The community has come together to offer support and comfort to those affected by this tragedy, emphasizing the need for solidarity and compassion during difficult times. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward and assist in the investigation to ensure that justice is served for the victim.
