Colombia’s government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) rebels revealed on Monday that they have recently held a meeting, despite facing challenges in their peace talks, and have agreed to continue negotiations in April.
The ELN, a guerrilla group that has been in conflict with the government since 1964, expressed last week that the talks were experiencing a crisis because the government engaged in discussions with regional communities. However, the government stated that it had fulfilled all of its commitments.
In a joint statement, both parties acknowledged that they had assessed the progress made in the accords and the obstacles encountered at the peace negotiation table. They also each committed to addressing these issues for the positive advancement of the peace process. The meeting took place in Havana over the weekend.
The statement announced that discussions will resume on April 8 in Venezuela, signaling a new phase in the peace talks between the Colombian government and the ELN rebels.
