Addressing concerns about the National Digital Identity, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that fears of leaked personal and banking records and implanted chips are baseless. Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, urged the public to embrace technological advancements in line with the country’s digital transformation.
“There is no need to fear for personal privacy. Bank Negara Malaysia will protect personal banking details,” Anwar reassured. The implementation of the Digital Identity system aims to modernize the country’s infrastructure.
Amidst concerns, Anwar became the first individual in Malaysia to register with the Digital ID. He dismissed fears of body chips, attributing them to exaggerated Hollywood scripts. Other officials including Deputy Prime Ministers Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Fadillah Yusof, and various ministers also followed suit.
Prior to adoption, Anwar urged the public to seek explanation from relevant ministries to build confidence in the system. While registration is currently voluntary, Anwar encouraged civil servants to participate, as government aid and subsidies would be channeled through the Digital ID.
Digital ID, a form of digital identification and verification, offers benefits to both public and private sectors for online transactions. It does not replace the MyKad system but provides a secure platform for online identity verification and prevents identity fraud. – Bernama
