Two individuals have been apprehended for trying to transport more than half a million ringgit worth of methamphetamine into Sarawak.

The first suspect, a 25-year-old chef, was captured after displaying suspicious behavior at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA 2).

The KLIA OCPD Asst Comm Imran Abd Rahman announced that the suspect was arrested near the airport’s departure hall at about 5am on Jan 21, and when authorities checked his bags, they found eight packets containing 8kg of methamphetamine, valued at a minimum of RM264,000.

He informed the press that the suspect was scheduled to board a 6.30am flight to Bintulu, Sarawak on the day of his arrest.

Following further investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had traveled to Kuala Lumpur with a friend on Jan 20 to retrieve the drugs, which were intended for sale in Sarawak.

“We conducted further investigations and found that the suspect’s friend had flown separately to Miri, Sarawak.

“We informed Miri Police and they arrested a man at around 9am just after he landed at the Miri Airport,” he stated, adding that the man was carrying at least 8.3kg of methamphetamine worth RM274,000.

According to ACP Imran, further questioning of the KLIA2 suspect revealed that he was paid RM8,000 per trip to transport drugs from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak.

“This suspect works as a cook at a hotel in Sabah and has six prior crime and drug-related offences,” he mentioned, adding that the suspects are believed to have used the self check-in facilities to evade detection, and the case has been classified as drug trafficking under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
