An experiment conducted in the US involving 3,000 people from different socio-cultural backgrounds aimed to determine the impact of AI software like ChatGPT on users’ opinions regarding hot topics such as the climate crisis and the Black Lives Matter movement. The results of the study were surprising and shed light on the influence of AI on shaping public opinion.

The existence of the climate crisis is supported by a global scientific consensus. However, climate skepticism continues to persist and divide society. The researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison focused on understanding how the GPT-3 language model would handle discussions with users from different cultural backgrounds in order to evaluate equity in human-AI communication.

The study published in Scientific Reports utilized the GPT-3 AI chatbot to engage 3,290 people on the topics of human-caused climate change and the Black Lives Matter movement. The researchers analyzed 20,000 dialogues to evaluate the chatbot’s effectiveness in engaging with users of diverse perspectives.

According to co-author Kaiping Chen, the fundamental goal of the interaction between the chatbot and users is to increase understanding of each other’s perspective. The study aimed to understand how a large language model like GPT-3 can foster mutual understanding between individuals.

Participants were allowed to engage with the chatbot on their own terms, and the study also collected feedback on the user experience. The researchers observed a shift in attitude in some participants, with 25% of the most skeptical participants showing a willingness to revise their judgment on the topics after their conversation with GPT-3.

The study revealed that GPT-3 was able to influence users’ attitudes, especially regarding climate change. Participants who previously expressed disagreement with climate change were likely to be provided with evidence by GPT-3, potentially leading to a shift in their perspectives.

Future research will delve deeper into the differences among chatbot users and aim to create effective dialogue between individuals with diverging opinions. The researchers believe that understanding perspectives, values, and cultures is crucial in opening dialogues that are important to society.

The findings of the study provide valuable insights into the potential impact of AI software like ChatGPT in shaping public opinion on critical societal issues. The researchers hope to use these findings to bridge communication gaps and foster understanding between individuals with differing perspectives. – AFP Relaxnews
