KOTA KINABALU: Two senior citizens were fatally injured in an accident in Penampang, near here, on Sunday (Oct 22) evening. The couple, in their 60s, died instantly when their vehicle was struck by a four-wheel drive (4WD) on Jalan Pintas, near Padimas Point, at approximately 6.50pm. Penampang district police chief Supt Sammy Newton stated that initial investigations revealed that the couple was attempting a U-turn when their car was hit by the 4WD, which was traveling towards the Donggongon township. The driver of the 4WD also sustained serious injuries and was transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment. The case is currently under investigation in accordance with Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Supt Newton called on witnesses to the incident to step forward and provide information on the matter on Monday (Oct 23).
Supt Newton urged road users to exercise caution while driving and requested the public to refrain from sharing images of the victims out of consideration for the family’s feelings. A spokesperson from the Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department confirmed that the bodies of the two victims were retrieved from the badly damaged car.
