(Reuters) – Sunrisers Hyderabad announced on Monday that Australian cricketer Pat Cummins will lead the team as captain for the upcoming 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Cummins, who has previously played for the Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, is making a return to the IPL after taking a break in 2023 to manage his busy schedule with the Australian national team.
Having been acquired by Hyderabad in the player’s auction for a whopping $2.46 million in December, Cummins briefly held the record for the most expensive player in IPL history, only to be surpassed by fellow Australian Mitchell Starc shortly after.
In taking over the captaincy role from South African cricketer Aiden Markram, Cummins will be looking to lead Hyderabad to a more successful season following their last-place finish in 2023.
Their campaign for redemption begins on March 23 with a match against Kolkata.
