According to Reuters, Dhananjaya de Silva has been named as the new captain of Sri Lanka’s test side, replacing Dimuth Karunaratne, as confirmed by the country’s cricket board (SLC) on Thursday.
During his four-year tenure as captain, Karunaratne led Sri Lanka in 30 tests, with 12 wins, 12 losses, and 6 draws.
The spin-bowling all-rounder de Silva, who has participated in 51 tests, will officially begin his captaincy with a one-off test against Afghanistan next month.
This change in leadership comes after SLC decided to replace Dasun Sanaka as the white-ball captain on Sunday, appointing Kusal Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga as the one-day and T20 squad leaders, respectively.
Following a disappointing ninth-place finish out of 10 teams at the 50-overs World Cup in India late last year, SLC made changes by appointing a new selection committee led by former opener, Upul Tharanga.
