In India, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis has stated that he will not alter his aggressive batting style after being appointed captain of the cricket team two games into the World Cup, following a teammate’s injury. Dasun Shanaka suffered a thigh muscle injury during a six-wicket defeat to Pakistan on Tuesday. The 32-year-old will require three weeks to recover, with Chamika Karunaratne replacing him in the squad.

Mendis has been one of the top scorers of the tournament so far, accumulating 198 runs in two matches. His first game as captain will be against Australia on Monday, with both teams yet to secure a win in the group stage. Mendis expressed his contentment with the captaincy, stating that he intends to continue playing in the same manner that has brought him success thus far.

He also mentioned that he has previous experience in captaining, as well as leading practice matches. In terms of his batting, Mendis aims to maintain his high level of performance and adapt to the team’s requirements. He acknowledged the absence of all-rounder Shanaka, considering it a significant disadvantage for the team.

Mendis expressed his regret over Shanaka’s absence, highlighting that the team had previously compensated for the loss of Wanidu Hasaranga. Shanaka’s injury necessitated a new addition to the squad. Mendis’s comments were made during a press conference on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan team will face Australia in their upcoming match. Both teams are currently winless in the group stage and will be keen to secure their first victory. Despite the challenging circumstances, Mendis remains optimistic and determined to lead the team to success.
