David Warner is preparing to end his 12-year career in cricket this week, on his own terms. Australian cricketers such as Steve Waugh, Shane Warne, and Glenn McGrath have retired in the New Year’s test at Sydney Cricket Ground, and Warner will do the same.

Despite not being the traditional test player, Warner set new standards for explosive openers in the sport’s early years. He brought limited-overs shot-making and high strike rates to the longest format of the game and was able to swing the momentum of a session in his team’s favor.

In his early years, Warner was known for his aggressive batting, but as he matured, he became a smarter cricketer who consistently delivered impressive performances for Australia. He has faced controversy due to his involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.

Although Warner has been criticized in some countries, such as England, he has gained popularity in places like India for his exceptional batting skills, which have made him a star in the cricket world.

Warner sees his legacy as being someone who gave his all to the sport, despite not fitting the stereotype of a traditional test player. He believes his authenticity and honesty have translated to his playing style in test cricket, where he continues to push himself to excel, even in his last test.

Throughout his career, Warner has achieved 26 centuries and scored 8,695 runs in 111 tests, with an average of just under 45 runs. He was born near the Sydney Cricket Ground, grew up playing cricket with his test opening partner Usman Khawaja, and was the first Australian cricketer to be selected for international matches before playing a first-class game.

Initially known for his performance in limited-overs matches, Warner proved himself in test cricket after scoring a century in only his second test. He continued to score runs and received the Allan Border Medal for being Australia’s best cricketer in 2016 and 2017. However, his career took a turn when he was banned from top-class cricket for a year due to his role in the ball-tampering scandal.

During his ban, Warner took the opportunity to spend time with his family and involve himself in grassroots cricket. Despite his punishment, he remains at peace with the situation, expressing his belief that the truth will eventually come out.

Warner has chosen not to speak publicly about what happened in the test against South Africa, but he remains content with the path his life has taken since then. He will be remembered as an all-time great in Australian cricket, despite the controversies that have tarnished his career.
