(Reuters) – South Africa’s all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo has been ruled out of the remainder of the One-Day International series against India. This news comes ahead of the second game to be played in Gqeberha on Tuesday.

Phehlukwayo, who scored 33 runs in South Africa’s innings total of 116 in the opening match, has a side strain. This injury has led to his exclusion from the squad. Uncapped seamer Ottniel Baartman is also out of the squad with the same injury, and has been replaced by Beuran Hendricks, who last played an ODI in 2021.

There has been no announcement on a replacement for Phehlukwayo yet. The updated South Africa ODI squad includes Aiden Markram (captain), Nandre Burger, Tony de Zorzi, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Mihlali Mpongwana, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne, and Lizaad Williams.

The team’s disappointing performance in the first match against India raises concerns about their chances in the series. Phehlukwayo’s absence will be keenly felt, as he is a valuable all-rounder for the team. The side will need to rethink their strategy for the remaining matches in the series.

It is a setback for South Africa to lose Phehlukwayo and Baartman, especially so early in the series. The team will have to regroup and adapt quickly to the changes in the squad if they are to put up a fight against India in the upcoming matches.

South Africa will need to rely on the remaining players to step up and fill the gap left by the injured all-rounder and seamer. The team will need to work together cohesively and improve their game to stay competitive in the series.

The absence of Phehlukwayo and Baartman is an opportunity for the other players in the squad to show their worth and contribute to the team’s success. It will be a test of the team’s depth and resilience in the face of adversity.

Despite the setbacks, South Africa will be aiming to bounce back in the upcoming matches and put up a stronger performance against India. The team will be looking for standout performances from their key players to turn the tide in their favor in the series.

As the series progresses, South Africa will need to make strategic decisions and adjustments to overcome the challenges posed by India. The team will need to stay focused and determined to make a comeback in the series after the setbacks they have faced.
