CHENNAI, India (Reuters) – Afghanistan emerged victorious with an eight-wicket win over Pakistan in the 50-over World Cup held in Chennai on Monday. This victory marks a significant achievement for Afghanistan, as they secured their first ODI win against Pakistan, who had won the championship in 1992.
Pakistan captain, Babar Azam, and opener Abdullah Shafique delivered half-centuries, contributing to their team’s final score of 282-7. In the last 10 overs, Pakistan managed to accumulate 91 runs on the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium’s turning track.
However, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz showcased an impressive opening partnership, amassing 130 runs rapidly. This strong start laid the foundation for Afghanistan’s successful chase. Rahmat Shah and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi then formed an unbroken 96-run partnership, leading Afghanistan to a comfortable victory.
With this win, Afghanistan secured their second victory in the tournament. The match was held at M.A.Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, which proved to be a challenging venue due to the turning track.
