In Afghanistan, former England batter Jonathan Trott has decided to continue as the head coach after their impressive performance at the World Cup in India.
At the 50-overs World Cup, Afghanistan managed to secure a sixth-place finish out of the 10 teams, defeating former winners England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. They also came close to defeating eventual champions Australia.
Trott, 42, saw significant success during his initial 18-month tenure, which also included Afghanistan’s T20 series victory against Pakistan and a one-day series victory against Bangladesh.
Following the success, the Afghanistan Cricket Board released a statement on Monday, confirming Trott’s contract extension until the end of the year.
“The decision comes in after his successful 18-month tenure, during which he made significant contributions to the team’s progress and development,” the statement read.
“Mr. Jonathan Trott expressed his pleasure on the extension of his contract and stated that he is looking forward to spending more time with the squad and building on performances of the recently held Cricket World Cup 2023.”
Currently, Afghanistan is participating in a T20 series in the United Arab Emirates against the home side and also have three 20-overs matches planned in India later this month.
Trott’s future goal is to maintain the team’s fearless playing style at the T20 World Cup scheduled for June in the United States and West Indies.
