According to an announcement made on Thursday, the number of cruise passengers welcomed at Greece’s Piraeus port in 2023 reached a historic high.
Greece’s Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA S.A.), which manages the country’s largest port, released preliminary figures indicating that the total number of passengers was approximately 1.5 million, compared to 880,000 in 2022. In terms of homeport arrivals, about 800,000 passengers arrived at Piraeus last year, increasing from 380,000 in 2022.
In 2023, the port served a total of 760 cruise ships, including 525 homeport arrivals, as per PPA’s data.
The cruise industry at the port also sees a positive trend in 2024 based on pre-bookings. Pre-bookings have already been made for 1,042 arrivals, with a significant increase and an anticipated new record in homeport arrivals (approximately 800 calls) in the new year.
After an international tender, China’s COSCO Shipping acquired the majority of PPA’s shares in 2016.
