Sydney (Reuters) – The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) announced on Monday that Australian Olympic track cyclist and former world champion Melissa Hoskins has tragically died in a car accident in the southern part of the country.
Reports in the Australian media have suggested that her husband, Rohan Dennis, who is a twice world individual time trial champion, has been arrested and charged in connection with her death.
The AOC expressed deep sadness at the loss of Hoskins and offered their condolences to her family, friends, and the cycling community during this difficult time.
At the age of 32, Hoskins had won gold in the team pursuit at the 2015 world championships and had represented Australia at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics.
A statement from the South Australia state police released on Sunday indicated that a 32-year-old woman, later identified as Hoskins, had succumbed to injuries sustained in a car accident in an inner northern suburb of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia.
According to the police, a 33-year-old man, identified as Hoskins’ husband Rohan Dennis, has been arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care, and endangering life. The driver was known to the victim and has been granted bail to appear in court on March 13, as per police reports.
A police spokesperson mentioned that the names of the individuals involved in the incident would not be confirmed.
