(Reuters) – Geraint Thomas has agreed to extend his contract with INEOS Grenadiers until 2025, according to an announcement made by the British team on Monday.
The Welsh cyclist, who came in second at this year’s Giro d’Italia and emerged victorious in the 2018 Tour de France, has committed to performing with INEOS Grenadiers for the next two years. Since his initial triumph, Thomas has consistently delivered impressive performances in France, securing a second-place finish in 2019 and a third-place finish in 2022.
Upon the completion of this new agreement, the 37-year-old hinted at the possibility of retirement.
“While you should never rule anything out, I currently consider this to be my final contract. However, I am confident that I still have two strong years ahead of me. Moreover, I couldn’t envision continuing my career with any other team,” stated Thomas.
Thomas affirmed his belief in the team’s understanding of his abilities and emphasized their shared pursuit of success.
“This team comprehends me and, importantly, understands the prerequisites for achieving triumph. We are an ambitious group with significant objectives on the horizon. I’m genuinely eager to dive back in and contribute to the team’s continuous progress,” Thomas expressed.
While Thomas aspires to remain competitive in upcoming races, he has also expressed his willingness to support emerging talent.
“At this stage, I am both driven to perform and content to assist the team. I aim to aid our resurgence to the pinnacle of the sport,” commented Thomas.
In addition to his road cycling achievements, Thomas has found success on the track, winning gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic team pursuit events as part of the British team.
