(Reuters) – Wout van Aert sustained multiple fractures in a crash during Belgium’s Dwars door Vlaanderen one-day race, forcing him to miss the upcoming Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, Team Visma-Lease a Bike announced on Wednesday.
Van Aert, a top contender for Wednesday’s race, was involved in a crash 65 kilometers from the finish line, leading to him lying on the ground in pain.
“A broken collarbone and several fractured ribs were confirmed after he was taken to the hospital,” Team Visma-Lease a Bike stated.
“The timeline for his recovery remains uncertain. However, he will definitely be sidelined for the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, and the Amstel Gold Race.”
Van Aert opted to skip the recent Paris-Nice and Milan-San Remo races to focus on a three-week altitude training camp in preparation for the Tour of Flanders on Sunday and Paris-Roubaix on April 7.
The Dwars door Vlaanderen race was won by Matteo Jorgenson, Van Aert’s American teammate and the champion of the Paris-Nice earlier this month. Despite the victory, Jorgenson’s concern was with Van Aert.
“The fall was severe, and it was evident that Wout was in trouble,” Jorgenson remarked.
“My thoughts are with him, and I hope he recovers swiftly. The situation now puts me in a peculiar position as a contender for the Tour of Flanders, but we will address that in due course.”
