(Reuters) – Jonas Vingegaard, along with Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel, was involved in a massive crash during stage four of the Tour of the Basque Country on Thursday. The incident occurred at high speed on the descent from the Olaeta climb with 35.9 kilometers remaining, as one rider went down, causing a chain reaction. Vingegaard was seen still on the ground receiving medical treatment several minutes later.
“The stage has been neutralized. Jonas is on his way to the hospital. An update will follow later,” Vingegaard’s Team Visma-Lease a Bike announced on social media platform X.
Vingegaard was carried away on a stretcher wearing a neck brace, while Evenepoel was also taken to the hospital and had to abandon the race.
“The race is neutralized until the finish line. The six leading riders will continue to compete in the stage, but their times will not count towards the general classification. The peloton will travel in a neutralized fashion until the finish line,” clarified race organizers.
