PRAGUE – The Czech parliament on Wednesday approved a defense treaty that strengthens ties between the Czech Republic and the United States. Further approval is still needed to allow US troops on Czech soil.
“This agreement is in our national interest and shows our excellent relations with the United States,” said Defense Minister Jana Cernochova.
The defense treaty is important due to Russia’s aggression and the increasing threat of a major military conflict in Europe. It has already been backed by the upper house of parliament and now awaits the signature of President Pet Pavel.
Most parties, including the main opposition party ANO, supported the agreement. The opposition far-right Direct Democracy Party was the only party that voted against.
The agreement outlines potential military installations for US troops, as well as regulations regarding jurisdiction, environmental concerns, and vehicle operations.
The Czech Republic is the 25th NATO member to reach such an agreement. It has purchased US attack helicopters and is considering buying F-35 fighter planes.
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has increased support for NATO, with Finland joining in April and Sweden applying for membership.
