(Reuters) – The Ministry for Emergency Situations has announced that the death toll from a fire at an ArcelorMittal-owned mine in Kazakhstan has risen to 38 people. At the same time, the search continues for eight missing miners, as stated by the Ministry on Sunday.
The ministry further added that the search operation is facing challenges due to the presence of destroyed mining equipment and rubble in certain areas.
In a statement released on Saturday, ArcelorMittal Temirtau, the local unit of Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal, confirmed that 206 out of the 252 individuals present at the Kostenko mine were successfully evacuated following what is believed to be a methane blast.
The Ministry for Emergency Situations stated that they are closely monitoring the gas situation at the mine.
