Multiple individuals were fatally shot on Thursday at a university in Rotterdam, a city in the Netherlands, as well as in a nearby house, according to the authorities.
A 32-year-old suspect was taken into custody after the police announced on social media that gunfire took place at the Rotterdam Medical Centre and a residence. They also reported that fires had broken out at both locations.
The precise number of casualties at each site remains unclear.
Online videos depict police instructing students, some wearing medical garments, to evacuate as heavily armed arrest teams arrived at the scene. One video showed a man restrained in handcuffs while wearing what appeared to be camouflage pants.
Two hours later, the police confirmed multiple deaths and stated that family members of the victims were being notified.
The police stated that there were no indications of a second shooter, and a press conference was scheduled by local officials.
