KUALA LUMPUR: The decision made by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to charge a senior police officer suspected of being involved in a fatal accident that resulted in the death of a Form Five student in Meru, Ipoh, with murder is evidence of the police’s transparency in their investigations.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husin stated that the AGC’s decision to charge the officer, who holds the rank of deputy superintendent (DSP), under Section 302 of the Penal Code on Monday (Dec 18) was based on evidence and testimonies gathered from a thorough investigation conducted by the investigating officer.
“The decision demonstrates the police’s commitment to transparency in probing criminal cases, even when they involve senior police officers. The investigation was carried out by the state police chief and the Ipoh district police chief, along with a competent and credible investigative team.
“I will not tolerate any personnel or officer who commits a crime, and I will ensure that a fair and transparent investigation is conducted to uphold the good reputation of the police force,” he told Bernama when asked to comment on the impending charges.
He also mentioned that the senior officer will be suspended immediately after the charges are filed the following day, and emphasized that all police officers and personnel should take heed of this unfortunate incident and learn from it.
It is imperative for every individual in the security force to constantly uphold the good reputation of the police force and not use their badge as a shield while committing a crime.
The tragic accident, in which the student was hit and dragged by a car along Jalan Taman Jati near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jati in Meru, Ipoh, had garnered much attention on Dec 15.
The 44-year-old senior police officer is believed to have been the driver of the car involved in the accident, which caused the death of Muhammad Zaharif Affendi due to severe injuries to his chest and abdomen. – Bernama
