CENTENNIAL, Colorado: In a chilling case, a Colorado dentist accused of killing his wife was found to have searched online for information on making murder look like a heart attack and the detection of arsenic in an autopsy, according to the police.
Angela Craig, the wife of James Craig, conducted her own online search for answers to her symptoms before her untimely death. District Attorney John Kellner revealed in a court hearing that Angela searched for doctors who could help her understand symptoms like vertigo, shaking, and cold lips.
District Attorney John Kellner stated, “This is a person who is tragically being slowly poisoned by her husband.” Despite Craig’s lawyers arguing the absence of direct evidence linking him to the poisoning, Judge Shay Whitaker ruled that there was enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
The toxicology tests conducted on Angela Craig’s body revealed that she had been poisoned with cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a substance found in over-the-counter eye drops. Arapahoe County coroner Kelly Lear testified about the cause of death during the hearing.
The court was filled with Angela Craig’s relatives, along with James Craig’s parents, who attended the hearing in which Judge Shay Whitaker made her ruling. Angela, who had been married to James for 23 years and was a mother of six, died on March 18 after her third trip to the hospital.
The investigation gained momentum when James’s dental practice partner, Ryan Redfearn, disclosed James’s purchase of potassium cyanide to a nurse, despite having no professional need for it. The evidence obtained by investigators led to James Craig becoming a suspect.
James Craig’s alleged relationship with fellow dentist Karin Cain also came to light during the investigation. Cain revealed that she had met James at a dental conference and they had been together for three weeks. While divorcing her husband of almost 30 years, Cain was unaware of Craig’s marital status, and she was reluctant to be referred to as his “mistress.”
Cain denied having planned a future with Craig and stated that she was not a motive for Angela Craig’s murder. Investigators believe that James poisoned Angela by sneaking arsenic into her protein shake and later ordered potassium cyanide after the failed attempt. The investigation is ongoing to determine how Angela Craig was poisoned with tetrahydrozoline.
James Craig’s defense attorney, Andrew Ho, suggested that his client’s online searches were related to suicidal tendencies rather than planning a murder. However, Angela Craig’s brother, Mark Pray, found this argument unfounded, stating that concealing the method of suicide was unusual.
Authorities intercepted the delivery of another substance, Oleandrin, which James had allegedly ordered. Oleandrin is a poisonous substance found in the leaves of the oleander plant. James claimed to have ordered potassium cyanide for his wife’s benefit but contradicted himself by telling a social worker about Angela’s suicidal tendencies.
Redfearn revealed that James Craig was facing bankruptcy and marital problems. Angela Craig’s sister, Toni Kofoed, also provided information about James drugging Angela five years prior. Kofoed believes this incident is relevant to the texts exchanged between Angela and James regarding her symptoms.
James Craig is now facing trial in connection with his wife’s murder.
