Russia’s 14th Army Corps deputy commander, Major General Vladimir Zavadsky, was announced dead in Ukraine by a top regional official on Monday, as reported by Reuters.
Alexander Gusev, the governor of Russia’s Voronezh region, confirmed Zavadsky’s death “at a combat post in the special operation zone” without providing additional details.
Russia has been using the term “special military operation” to describe the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which is now entering its second year.
According to investigative news outlet iStories, Zavadsky’s death marks the seventh Major General and the twelfth senior officer to be reported dead since the start of the war.
The deaths of senior Russian officers, attributed by military analysts to some extent to Ukrainian success in intercepting lax communications, have decreased as the conflict has progressed.
Gusev described Zavadsky as a highly decorated officer and former tank commander, calling his death a significant loss that brought “transfixing pain.”
