ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — According to State Minister for Ethiopia Government Communication Service, Selamawit Kassa, desert locust swarms have been identified in five regions and one city administration in Ethiopia. The affected areas include Afar, Amhara, Somali, Tigray, Oromia regions, and Dire Dawa city administration. These swarms have resulted in the destruction of approximately 25,000 hectares of crops, leading to a decrease in crop yields and negatively impacting the livelihoods of farmers in the affected regions.
Kassa mentioned that a joint effort is being made to control the desert locust swarms with the participation of farmers. This effort involves the implementation of both traditional and modern measures, including the use of aerial and vehicular spraying.
Furthermore, it has been reported that termite swarms have been observed in 317,000 hectares of land across 15 zones in Oromia, Afar, and Tigray regions. In response, various traditional and modern methods are being employed to address the termite infestations.
