MELAKA: Two thousand deserving students from across the country will receive free pairs of spectacles in celebration of Deepavali. Eyecon CEO Datuk Dr Murphy Chan Hian Kee has launched a charity programme to provide complimentary spectacles to improve reading and writing skills by addressing poor eyesight. According to Chan, “This year, we have chosen the Deepavali season to brighten the hearts of underprivileged students by giving them clear vision and focus in classrooms.” He also stated that the programme will continue annually and distribute high-quality spectacle frames and lenses during other festive seasons.

Chan mentioned that the glasses will be handed out after conducting eye tests at selected schools. Initially, the programme will cover national-type and vernacular schools in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, and Melaka, with plans for expansion to other parts of the country. The main objective of this initiative is to provide free eye care services and glasses to schoolchildren who previously did not have the opportunity due to their parents’ financial burden. As part of the symbolic launch, two Tamil-type schools in Melaka were selected.

Chan highlighted that poor eyesight often hampers student performance in schools, particularly within hardcore-poor and rural communities. Eyecon will also collaborate continuously with local communities and school management to enhance vision and promote eye health among schoolchildren. Since 2010, Eyecon has been dedicated to improving eye care and providing vision aids to deserving and underprivileged communities, including schools, orphanages, and elderly care centers.

The Eyecon team reaches rural schools through a mobile vision vehicle equipped with portable vision testing equipment, enabling them to detect vision errors, binocular vision problems, color vision issues, and various eye conditions.
