A 38-year-old man has died while in the Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan police lock-up. The incident took place on Wednesday (Nov 22) as confirmed by Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance department director Comm Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad.

The detainee had been transferred to the lock-up from Pengkalan Chepa Prison in relation to a court case in which he was recently sentenced to two years of imprisonment from his arrest date of July 5, under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, as stated in the director’s statement on Friday (Nov 24).

Comm Azri reported that the detainee complained of feeling unwell at 7:42 pm on Wednesday, prompting the arrival of medical personnel from the Pengkalan Chepa Health Clinic. Unfortunately, the personnel pronounced him dead upon their arrival.

Additionally, an autopsy performed at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II in Kota Baru revealed no signs of injuries linked to foul play, with the deceased also testing negative for Covid-19. However, the exact cause of death remains pending until laboratory results are obtained.

Comm Azri further commented that investigations into the case will be continued by the Crime and Death in Custody Investigations Unit before the findings are submitted to the Coroner.
