PETALING JAYA: Tengku Yasmin Nastasha Tengku Abdul Rahman, along with her mother, was aggrieved by their portrayal as enemies of Islam after challenging Kelantan Syariah law. She expressed on social media that she has been struggling to sleep and eat following the Federal Court decision on the petition filed by her Kelantan-born lawyer mother Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid and herself.

Tengku Yasmin Nastasha expressed frustration with the way their petition has been misconstrued, saying that they were solely motivated by adherence to due process in the enactment and application of laws.
On Friday (Feb 9), the Federal Court nullified 16 provisions under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment (1) 2019 due to the state legislature not having the power to enact laws on those matters.

Tengku Yasmin Nastasha clarified that her petition sought a judicial review by the Federal Court to see if the Kelantan state assembly had exceeded its constitutional mandate, as enshrined in Schedule 9 of the Federal Constitution.
Yasmin and her mother have been the target of death threats and takfirs (the practice of one Muslim declaring another an unbeliever) since last August.

The police have now started investigating the threats against Nik Elin, with the Kuala Lumpur police chief confirming that she has lodged reports regarding the death threats.
