According to Warisan vice-president Datuk Junz Wong, the Sabah government needs to act urgently to improve the Dual Language Programme (DLP) in the state. This statement comes in light of recent discussions and worries about the potential decline of the programme.

Wong pointed out the apparent lack of effort or sense of urgency on the part of the state in reintroducing English in schools through the DLP. He mentioned that the progress of DLP classes selected for some Sabah secondary schools seems to have stalled.

He also highlighted the fact that Sabah has not been pushing the DLP, unlike neighbouring Sarawak, which has maintained a degree of autonomy in its educational directives that places emphasis on English in schools.

Wong stressed the need for Sabah to prioritize the DLP in order to protect its autonomy and educational standards. He also criticized the GRS state government for appearing indifferent to the issue.

He emphasized that the importance of the DLP goes beyond just language, stating that it is about securing a future where children can be leaders in a globally interconnected world.

Wong demanded action, commitment, and a clear timeline for the implementation of the DLP. He stated that the time for half-measures and delays is over, and that children’s ability to thrive in a globalized world depends on their proficiency in English and Bahasa Malaysia.

He further stated that the DLP is not just an educational programme, but a strategic imperative for the state’s competitiveness. Wong, whose party is in opposition at the state level, stressed the importance of Sabah not being left behind as the world advances.

He urged for the reinstatement and expansion of DLP classes in order to equip students with the necessary knowledge to compete globally and succeed.
