The Dominican Republic reported a death toll of at least 21 individuals due to heavy rains that displaced thousands of residents the day before. Over 13,000 people were forced to relocate to safer areas as a result of the torrential rains, causing flooding, power outages, and structural damage.

According to the Emergency Operations Center (COE), the storm’s impact included the loss of 21 lives. Among the victims were nine individuals who perished on Saturday when the wall of a highway tunnel collapsed onto their vehicles, as reported by the National Police.

Footage circulated on social media depicted rushing water overtaking cars on streets and flooding the lower levels of buildings. Protection agencies conducted over 2,500 rescues, while more than 2,600 homes felt the impact of the storm, as confirmed by the COE.

As of Sunday afternoon, 45 communities remained without communication, according to the COE’s report. The widespread displacement and destruction prompted a significant response from authorities and relief organizations. The devastation also resulted in disruptions to transportation and connectivity throughout the affected region.

The Dominican Republic now faces the immense task of providing aid, rebuilding damaged infrastructure, and supporting those affected by the deadly storm. The true extent of the damage and the long-term implications for the affected communities will become clearer in the coming days as recovery and relief efforts continue.

The government and relief agencies are working to address the urgent needs of those impacted by the disaster, including providing emergency shelter, food, and medical care. The displaced residents and communities now grapple with the daunting process of recovery, as they work to rebuild their homes and livelihoods in the wake of the devastating storm.

Despite the significant loss of life and widespread destruction, the response from authorities and the community has been swift and focused, with efforts concentrated on providing essential support to those affected by the disaster.

As the situation continues to develop, international aid and support may also play a crucial role in assisting the Dominican Republic in its recovery from the deadly storm and its aftermath.
