KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General’s Chambers must review the charges against Datuk Seri Najib Razak based on a leaked memo that suggests dropping his 1MDB case, according to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The President of Umno stated that if the leaked memo is authentic, Najib must receive the justice he deserves.

“I believe that the AGC should review the charges thrown at Najib.

“If the memo is genuine, I am confident the AGC will take immediate action by dropping the charges,” said the Deputy Prime Minister during a press conference at the Jualan Desa Madani event at Menara MARA on Monday (Aug 28).

Ahmad Zahid made this statement when asked whether Umno would urge the AGC to respond promptly to the authenticity of the leaked memo.

Reportedly, the leaked 12-page internal memo from the AGC was addressed to the former AG, Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, dated Sept 10, 2019.

In the memo, the prosecution team for the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) expressed concerns that a strong prima facie case could not be established for the six charges against Najib and former Treasury Secretary-General, Tan Sri Irwan Serigar, at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur on October 25, 2018.

Ahmad Zahid mentioned that Malaysians, including Umno leaders and members, have placed their trust in the AGC to administer justice, while denouncing Najib’s charges as “persecution” of the former Prime Minister.

“The AGC should prioritize the fountain of justice, and we have confidence in the AGC’s credibility and capability to review and take positive action, ensuring that Najib receives true justice,” he added.

The aforementioned case involves charges against the former Prime Minister and Irwan at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on October 25, 2018.

The two were jointly charged with six counts under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust (CBT) totaling RM6.6 billion in government funds related to payments made to IPIC.

On December 7, 2018, the case was transferred to the High Court.

On August 17, Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun stated that the AGC was investigating the matter but did not confirm the authenticity of the memo.
