According to public prosecutors, a man who is now suspected of shooting three people in Rotterdam had displayed erratic behavior and had received a warning letter from prosecutors to his school. The 32-year-old man is scheduled to appear before a judge on October 3. He is being held on suspicion of shooting a 39-year-old woman, who lived near his home, along with her 14-year-old daughter, as well as a 43-year-old doctor who taught at the Erasmus Medical Center where the suspect was a student. All three victims tragically lost their lives.
Dutch media circulated a letter from prosecutors to the Erasmus Medical Center, confirming its authenticity. The letter highlighted the suspect’s “psychotic behavior,” problems with alcohol, and complaints from neighbors regarding his treatment of animals. However, the date of the letter was not visible. The letter also suggested that the information provided could factor into the decision regarding the suspect’s eligibility for a general doctor’s diploma.
The school, upon receiving the letter, reportedly decided not to grant the diploma to the man, identified by some media outlets as Fouad L. The prosecutors’ spokesperson did not comment on this matter. The motive for the shooting is currently under investigation by the police.
Since the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, Dutch television news has been broadcasting images of students and patients being evacuated from the hospital. Fatal shootings are uncommon in the Netherlands, leading to condolences from various figures, including the mayor of Rotterdam and the country’s king and queen.
The suspect allegedly set fires at the university and the woman’s home before being arrested shortly after fleeing a building. Rotterdam’s chief prosecutor, Hugo Hillenaar, revealed that the suspect had a history of encounters with the police and had been prosecuted and convicted for animal abuse in 2021.
