CAIRO (Reuters) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has announced that he will run for a third term in the upcoming presidential election set to take place in December.
Al-Sisi, formerly an army chief, has been serving as the president since 2014. Following constitutional amendments made four years ago, which would enable him to remain in office until 2030, it was widely anticipated that he would seek re-election and secure a third term.
Over the past few weeks, his supporters have launched a campaign urging Al-Sisi to run, using billboards and public messages to express their support.
Al-Sisi came to power after leading the overthrowing of the democratically elected Mohamed Mursi from the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013. He has already won the presidential elections in 2014 and 2018, garnering 97% of the vote on both occasions.
Amidst Egypt’s struggles with soaring inflation and a chronic scarcity of foreign currency, this upcoming election holds significant importance.
