According to a news report, an 82-year-old former airline technician was fined RM2,500 by an Ampang Magistrate’s Court after he admitted to defrauding a man by convincing him that his luggage was stuck at the KL International Airport (KLIA).

The accused, Raja Shahyan Raja Abdullah, allegedly deceived 59-year-old Abdul Khadar Ahmad Ali into believing that his luggage was held up at KLIA, leading the victim to pay RM2,700 to release it. It was stated that the victim would not have paid the amount had he not been tricked by the defendant.

Raja Shahyan carried out the act at a hotel in Ampang, Selangor between 1.40pm on July 19 and 3.39pm on July 24, 2023. He was charged under Section 415 of the Penal Code, which stipulates a maximum prison sentence of five years or a fine or both upon conviction.

The presiding Magistrate, Amalina Basirah Md Top, also ordered the defendant to serve a one-month jail term if he is unable to pay the fine.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Norhidayah Abdullah Sani handled the prosecution, while the defendant was represented by lawyer Izleen Ismail. – Bernama
