PETALING JAYA: One of the two children who were critically ill after consuming crackers suspected to contain rat poison passed away at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of Penang Hospital (HPP) on Wednesday morning, July 10.

The matter was confirmed by the mother of the two children, Nurain Hasnorizal, 25 when contacted by Sinar Harian on Wednesday.

Nurain said her eldest son, Muhammad Akil Syauqi Nur Sufian, 3, breathed his last at 8.40am.

“My son is dead. Now I’m waiting for the autopsy process,” he said tearfully.

The two brothers, Muhammad Akil and Muhammad Luth Syauqi, 2, were being treated at the Penang Hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) after eating what are believed to be poison-laced crackers in Kampung Padang Ubi, Labu Besar, Kulim in Kedah on Sunday (July 7).

On Monday (July 8), Kulim district police chief Supt Mohd Azizul Mohd Khairi said the mother of the two brothers became aware of the incident at 11am after her children vomited and were foaming at the mouth.

The two victims are believed to have taken a packet of crackers containing rat poison, which was hung on the fence of a nearby garden and believed to be used to kill monkeys.
