In 2023, employers across Malaysia have been issued over RM4.3 million in compound notices for various labour violations, according to Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar.
Between January and October of that year, a total of 1,654 investigation papers were opened, covering offences under the Employment Act, Employees’ Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act, as well as the Minimum Wages Order. “Some employers are not making Employee Provident Fund (EPF) and Socso contributions for their workers,” Sivakumar said.
At a press conference after visiting an operation at Pasar Borong KL on Wednesday (Nov 15), the minister revealed that they had fined offenders RM391,236 for 357 investigation papers while 775 others had RM3.958 million in compound notices.
The operations at the market were conducted following numerous complaints, with a focus on ensuring that no workers were facing discrimination. They also received information that some employers were not paying their workers, and discovered that some were paying in cash, an offense unless approved by the Labour Department director general.
Sivakumar emphasized that paying wages via banks was to record the transactions and ensure there was no manipulation.
