(Reuters) – European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell expressed the need for increased military aid in Ukraine and assured ongoing support from the EU during his visit to Kyiv on Sunday.
“Ukraine needs more capabilities and needs them at a faster pace,” he stated in a message posted on X, the platform previously known as Twitter. Borrell disclosed that he discussed the provision of “continuous EU military assistance” in his first face-to-face meeting with Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.
“We are making preparations for long-term security commitments to Ukraine,” Borrell further stated.
Earlier this week, the European Defence Agency responded to Reuters’ queries by confirming that seven EU countries had placed orders for ammunition under a procurement scheme. The aim is to promptly deliver artillery shells to Ukraine and replenish the diminished stockpiles in Western countries.
“Our intention is to address the urgent needs of Ukraine while also ensuring the availability of necessary supplies for Western nations,” a spokesperson for the European Defence Agency commented.
