On November 17, Everton received a 10-point deduction from the Premier League for breaching the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2021-22 season, as stated by Reuters. This deduction will result in Everton dropping from 14th place to the relegation zone, placing them above bottom side Burnley based on goal difference.

The Premier League had filed a complaint against Everton and subsequently referred the case to an independent commission earlier in the year. During the proceedings, Everton admitted that they had breached the PSRs for the 2021/22 season, however, there was disagreement over the extent of the breach, as mentioned in a statement by the league.

The Commission’s assessment revealed that Everton’s PSR Calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5 million (RM725 million), which exceeded the permitted threshold of £105 million pounds as per the PSRs. In response, Everton expressed their intention to appeal the decision, stating that the sanction was “wholly disproportionate and unjust.”

They also asserted that they had been forthcoming and transparent in the information provided to the Premier League, maintaining that they have always respected the integrity of the process. Furthermore, the club disputed the Premier League’s allegation that they failed to act with the utmost good faith, and expressed their confusion over this particular charge.

Everton contended that the severity of the sanction imposed by the Commission was not a fair or reasonable reflection of the evidence submitted, arguing that both the harshness and severity of the sanction were unjust, as reported by Reuters.
