A former employee of British intelligence has admitted to attempting to murder a worker from the United States National Security Agency, as stated by the police and the Crown Prosecution Service on Wednesday.
Joshua Bowles, aged 29, repeatedly stabbed the unnamed woman, who was employed at the British intelligence agency GCHQ at the time, during an attack in March near GCHQ’s headquarters in Cheltenham, located in the western part of England.
The Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) confirmed that Bowles had previously been employed at GCHQ, although he was no longer working there when the assault occurred. It was stated by CTPSE that Bowles cited the woman’s work at GCHQ as his motive for the attack.
“This was an unprovoked and violent attack against two innocent victims,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Olly Wright, who heads CTPSE, in a statement.
Prosecutor Emma Gargitter informed London’s Old Bailey that Bowles had conducted research on two other American government employees, and therefore should be sentenced as someone found guilty of a terrorist offense, as reported by the BBC.
Bowles pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder and one count of assaulting a man who tried to intervene and stop the attack. The sentencing will take place at a later date.
