Former PKR vice-president N. Surendran has resigned from the party, citing disappointment with its leadership.
On Wednesday (Feb 7), Surendran made his decision public in response to a reminder from PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil to practice party discipline when expressing discontent.
He expressed his disillusionment with the lack of response to the reforms PKR had once promised and stated, “There is no point in being a member of a party that no longer represents change and reform. Take this as my resignation.”
Surendran, who served as Padang Serai MP from 2013 to 2018, had criticized Pakatan Harapan leaders for their silence regarding the sedition probe against former Damansara MP Tony Pua. Pua had raised questions about the reduction of former Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s sentence by the Pardons Board.
In response to Surendran’s resignation, Fahmi reminded him to adhere to party discipline.
As a member of PKR, I have resigned. There has been a lot of dissatisfaction with the party leadership. There have been no reforms by PKR. So, I think it is futile to remain as a member,” Surendran told The Star on Thursday.
Taking to social media, Surendran said he had already ceased being an active member of the party for a significant time. In a Facebook post later on Thursday, he said, “No point in being a member of a party that no longer represents change and reform. Take this as my resignation.”
Surendran’s criticism comes amid increasing tensions within PKR, further highlighting the fracture within the party and the broader Pakatan Harapan coalition.
According to a statement released by Surendran on Thursday, he made the decision to resign from PKR due to what he described as a lack of reform and progress within the party.
He had also questioned the silence of Pakatan Harapan leaders regarding the sedition probe into Tony Pua, a former member of Parliament.
