KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Christina Liew, the Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, has announced plans to expand the Api-Api night food market in the city centre. Liew revealed that two additional locations have been identified for new night markets in downtown Kota Kinabalu.
The existing Api-Api market will see the addition of 50 new stalls, joining the current 95 stalls, which presently operate along Block A and Block B of the Gaya Street area. The new stalls will be set up at Block C and Block D.
Furthermore, two new night market locations, namely Bandaran Berjaya and D’Suang Sadong Jaya, are set to open by the end of August. The Bandaran Berjaya night market is expected to accommodate 30 stalls, while D’Suang Sadong Jaya will offer 40 stalls.
In her statement on Tuesday (Aug 8), Liew highlighted Kota Kinabalu’s increasing popularity among tourists, with one million arrivals recorded in the first half of 2023. She emphasized that these measures were necessary to provide more tourism products, particularly in the city centre.
The Bandaran Berjaya night market will not only feature stalls but also buskers’ performances, with a focus on food and beverages. On the other hand, the D’Suang Sadong Jaya market will specialize in seasonal fruits and barbeque-inspired food.
Liew expressed hope that these new market platforms would not only boost the economy for stall sellers but also invigorate Kota Kinabalu as a whole.
