(Reuters) – Senegal is set to hold a delayed election on March 24 to choose a new President to succeed Macky Sall, who is stepping down after serving two terms. This election is of great importance and below are some key issues that are influencing voters.

One of the major concerns for Senegalese voters is the lack of job opportunities. Youth unemployment has been a persistent problem, with over 60% of the population under the age of 25. In 2019, 35% of young Senegalese were not in employment, education, or training. The economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have only exacerbated the job market challenges. This frustration has led to support for opposition figure Ousmane Sonko, especially among the younger population, although he is not running himself.

The rising cost of living is another significant issue for voters in Senegal. External factors such as the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the strengthening of the US dollar have contributed to inflation and increased living expenses. Around a third of Senegal’s 17 million population live in poverty, making the cost of living a pressing concern. Despite government subsidies for low-income families, public opinion polls show that a majority of Senegalese believe the government has mishandled the economy.

Migration is also a key issue in the upcoming election. Many voters are hoping that the next President will address the root causes of migration by creating more job opportunities within the country. The dangerous journey from West Africa to Europe via the Atlantic Ocean has seen a significant increase, with thousands of Senegalese and Gambians attempting the risky voyage. This has led to concerns about the safety and wellbeing of these migrants.

The upcoming launch of oil and gas production in Senegal in 2024 is expected to significantly boost the economy. However, there are questions about how the wealth generated from natural resources will be distributed and whether it will benefit the broader population. Campaign promises from candidates include renegotiating energy contracts to maximize revenues and ensuring that the prosperity from the oil boom is shared among the citizens.

Past political turmoil, including the failed attempt to postpone the election by the ruling coalition, has further eroded support for the current government. This move sparked widespread protests and raised suspicions that President Sall was attempting to extend his mandate, which he has denied. Internal government polling suggests that only 60% of those who voted for Sall in the previous election plan to support the ruling coalition candidate in the upcoming election.

Overall, the Senegalese election is shaping up to be a crucial event that will determine the country’s future direction. Voters are closely evaluating candidates’ positions on key issues such as job creation, cost of living, migration, and the management of natural resources. The outcome of this election will have far-reaching implications for the economy, social welfare, and governance in Senegal. The international community will also be watching closely to see how the election results unfold and what it means for the country’s stability and development.
