Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has expressed agreement with Umno Supreme Council’s proposal to push the government to establish the Malaysia Gig Economy Commission immediately, and he will make efforts to bring the issue to the Cabinet meeting next week. The Madani government spokesman stated that the proposal holds merit in light of the thriving gig economy, particularly in food delivery services.

Fahmi acknowledged the rapid growth and diversity of the gig economy, noting its role in aspects of the free market, especially concerning wages. He also emphasized the importance of ensuring the welfare of gig workers, highlighting his consistent efforts to assist ride-hailing riders. This was stated by Fahmi at the Jiwa Madani Programme in Kampung Sungai Putat, Ayer Keorh, on Saturday.

The event, which attracted approximately 1,000 residents from surrounding villages, featured various activities, including booths for Central Database Hub (Padu) registration, Rahmah Sales, and free health check-ups provided by different agencies, including those under the Communications Ministry. Youth and Sports Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim and Deputy Speakers of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly Kerk Chee Yee and Fairul Nizam were also in attendance.

Umno Secretary-General Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki was reported as saying that the Umno Supreme Council unanimously agreed to request the swift establishment of the Malaysia Gig Economy Commission to safeguard the welfare and rights of gig economy workers in Malaysia. Fahmi also reported that around 56,000 people had registered at the Padu booths of the programme as of Friday, and encouraged more people, including civil servants, to register with the system to ensure eligibility for direct government assistance. – Bernama
