KOTA KINABALU: A tragic incident unfolded at the Likas Stadium on Wednesday (Aug 9) during the match between Sabah FC and Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), as a 39-year-old football fan collapsed and later passed away.
The spectator suddenly collapsed at around 8.30pm, shortly after Sabah FC scored a goal in the Super League match. Witnesses stated that the man lost consciousness amidst the celebrations of the goal.
A fellow spectator, who wished to remain anonymous, happened to be a healthcare worker and rushed to assist the victim. He performed CPR and tried to call for medical assistance.
A medical team swiftly arrived at the scene and put the victim on a stretcher. They transferred him to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, the man passed away while receiving medical care at the hospital later that night, according to the attending doctor.
The healthcare worker expressed his condolences and stated, “I did what I could,” acknowledging the gravity of the situation and sympathizing with the victim’s family.
The Super League match ended with Sabah being defeated by JDT with a score of 1-5. The match drew a crowd of approximately 15,000 football fans.
